Young people were painted in blue light in a nightclub's smoking room. I made portraits of them. Strangely disconnected from my surroundings, I felt blue. Looking around, my peers literally represented that feeling. As I made the images with my phone-camera, the low quality images accentuated the haziness of the moment. Especially when printing them on large format paper.
Added to the blue series are clear photographs I made on a long walk on vacation. They carry blueness in a metaphorical way. An empty swimming pool, a man watching waves break, a woman's back turned towards me. A feeling, a mood, a sense of melancholy.
Combining both interpretations of blueness result in the harmonious contradiction of night and day, darkness and light, fear and hope.
